Steve Charlish Photography and Video

Hello and many thanks for visiting my site I am a Leicestershire, UK based photographer. I have experience in a wide spectrum of photographic situations and problem solving using analogue and digital media which helps me provide a can do attitude.

I am a location, outdoor photographer and much prefer the quality of daylight to artificial light.

The cover photograph of 'Elaine and Johnny in a boat' on my home page was taken on a December day for a Long Player vinyl record sleeve that ultimately was not used by the client in favour of a completely different location shot that I had taken.

In 1973 I started training as a general photographer building on experiences of studio and location photography. In 1974 I bought a Hasselblad camera and that set a bench mark for all my work. The character and build quality of their Ziess lenses is something that amazes me even today, of course NASA flew Hasselblad cameras to the moon.

In the 1980s my hobby of flying started playing an important part of my working life. I trained for and obtained a commercial pilots licence and this enabled me to do a range of aerial work flying hot air balloons and aircraft. I always took a camera aloft whether commissioned or not and so I have an extensive archive of aerial photographs taken in the Leicestershire area in the 1990's of which many buildings have now disappeared. This archive images are  available for prints and publishing licences.

Clients have included the BBC TV, BBC radio Leicester, East Midlands Today TV,

Channel Islands TV, Leicester Mercury,Times Education Supplement, Sandicliffe Motor Group and Severn Trent Water plc.

Photography increasingly transformed into the digital medium from the 1990's, but the recent vogue and resurgence in analogue photography has come as no surprise. Analogue can offer a picture image uniqueness which may not be surpassed. However, digital cameras are very useful and have a huge technical advantage in poor light conditions, with excellent colour matching and instantaneous data transfer. I am happy to work in both mediums.

I have a street photography archive taken in the Leicestershire area from 1974 onward which has proven popular by the amount of requests for prints.

Recently I have enjoyed making documentary videos and books, I have lined up several documentary projects for when we are fully out of self isolation from this horrid Coronavirus Pandemic.

The projects that I have lined up include a World War Two bombing incident in Leicester and a project about future recycling in Leicester.

The approach to any situation is utilize the vast experience of photography, film and Video
